Reformer Revolution FAQs

Everything you need to know before your first class

From choosing a class to finding the right studio, here are clear, practical answers to help you book with confidence.

Reformer Pilates basics

New to the Reformer? Here’s what it is, how it feels and what you can expect from your time in the studio.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a full-body workout performed on a specialist machine called a Reformer. Springs, straps and a moving carriage create adjustable resistance to support strength, control, mobility and balance.

How does the Reformer work?

The Reformer uses spring resistance rather than heavy weights. Your instructor will guide you through controlled movements using the carriage, footbar and straps, adjusting the setup to suit the exercise and your level.

Is Reformer Pilates suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Foundation classes are designed for first-timers and those returning after a break. You’ll be shown how to use the machine, given clear cues and encouraged to move at a pace that feels right for you.

What benefits can I expect from Reformer Pilates?

With regular practice, many people notice improved core strength, posture, mobility, coordination and whole-body control. It can feel challenging without being high impact, and progress builds gradually over time.

Will I get a full-body workout?

Yes. Reformer Pilates works far more than your core. Classes can challenge your legs, glutes, arms, back and abdominal muscles while improving stability and flexibility through purposeful, controlled movement.

Do I need to be fit or flexible to start?

No. You do not need Pilates experience, impressive flexibility or a certain fitness level. Start with Foundation, let your instructor know if you have any concerns, and focus on learning the movements well.

New to Reformer? Start with confidence.

Your first class is a chance to get familiar with the Reformer at a comfortable pace. Your instructor will introduce the machine, explain the key movements and offer clear options throughout, so you never need to know everything before you arrive. Expect focused, full-body work rather than perfection; a little shake, a new awareness of your muscles and a satisfying sense of progress are all completely normal. With each visit, the movements begin to feel more familiar, your control grows and your confidence follows.

What to wear and bring

  • Wear comfortable activewear you can move freely in
  • Choose fitted pieces where possible, so your instructor can see your alignment
  • Layers are useful for arriving and leaving the studio
  • Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Leave valuables to a minimum where you can
  • Come ready to move—there is no need for specialist Pilates clothing
  • Grip socks are required for every Reformer class
  • They help you stay secure on the carriage and studio floor
  • Bring your own favourite pair if you have them
  • Need a pair? Ask the team about grip socks available at the studio
  • Please avoid bare feet on the equipment
  • Clean, comfortable socks make for a better session for everyone
  • Aim to arrive 10 minutes before your first class
  • For regular visits, arrive a few minutes early to settle in
  • Check in with the team when you arrive
  • Let your instructor know about any injuries, pregnancy or concerns
  • Bring water and your grip socks
  • We provide the Reformer, instruction and everything else you need to get moving

Step 1

Arrive ready to move

Please arrive a little early, especially for your first visit, so you can check in, store your belongings and begin without rushing. Late arrivals can disrupt the class and may not be able to join once the warm-up has started.

Step 2

Keep your space clean

Fresh grip socks are required, and we ask everyone to wipe down their Reformer and any shared equipment after class. Small habits keep the studio comfortable, clean and ready for the next person.

Step 3

Treat the Reformer with care

Our Reformers are built to work hard, but they deserve careful handling. Follow your instructor’s cues when adjusting springs and straps, and always ask if you are unsure about an adjustment.

Step 4

Make room to focus

Please silence your phone and keep conversations low once class begins. Give yourself—and everyone around you—the space to concentrate, move well and enjoy the 50 minutes together.

Booking & Studio Policies

Cancellations

Please cancel or move your class through your booking account before the cancellation window shown at checkout. Late cancellations may be charged or deducted from your class pack, so another client has the chance to book your space.

Late arrivals

Arrive a few minutes early to settle in safely. If you arrive after class has started, entry may not be possible, particularly for Foundation sessions where the opening guidance is important.

Missed classes

If you do not attend and have not cancelled within the stated window, your class credit or booking fee will usually be forfeited. We understand plans change; please manage your booking as early as you can.

Transfers & changes

You can transfer to another available class before the booking deadline via your account. Transfers are subject to availability, and spaces at both Tufnell Park and Bankside / SE1 can fill quickly.

Booking deadlines

Bookings can be made online while spaces are available. Join the waitlist if a class is full, and keep an eye on your email or account for any space that becomes available.
